Floppy RCD Toggle? 3 Checks That Solved an EV Charger Callout and Exposed a Hidden Safety Risk
Introduction
A customer called NAT4MAX after an EV electrical fault. The RCD toggle inside the consumer unit felt floppy and would not stay in the ON position. At first, it looked like a faulty RCD. However, proper electrical fault finding revealed something different.
Body
The installation used an older RCD with three toggle positions. To reset it correctly, the lever first had to be pushed fully down before being lifted back up. Once reset correctly, power was restored.
Does a floppy RCD always mean replacement? No. Older RCD designs can behave differently, although repeated tripping should always be investigated.
While on site, we offered our free smoke alarm check. The alarms should have been replaced by 2022, making them around four years overdue. Because we carry replacement alarms in our van, we replaced them that evening.
Shortly afterwards, the new smoke alarm lost its green power light. Further investigation found that the MCB was not correctly seated on the consumer unit busbar. We repositioned it, restored the supply and confirmed correct smoke alarm operation.
Conclusion
One EV callout uncovered three important electrical safety issues. If your RCD will not reset, your smoke alarm has no green power light, or your consumer unit behaves unusually, professional electrical fault finding` can prevent a small problem becoming a serious one.

Frequently Asked Questions About a Floppy RCD Toggle
Why does my RCD toggle feel floppy?
A floppy RCD toggle does not automatically mean the RCD is faulty. Some older RCDs have a three position mechanism. After tripping, the lever may sit in a middle position and feel unusually loose until it is correctly reset.
How do I reset an older three position RCD?
On some older RCD models, the toggle must first be pushed fully into the OFF position before it can be moved firmly back to ON. If it will not stay on after the correct reset procedure, do not repeatedly force it. An electrical fault may be causing the RCD to trip.
Why won’t my RCD stay in the ON position?
An RCD that will not stay on could indicate a faulty appliance, damaged wiring, moisture, an earth leakage fault or a problem with the RCD itself. Professional electrical fault finding can determine the cause.
Does a floppy RCD need replacing?
Not necessarily. The operating mechanism and RCD type should first be identified and tested. However, an RCD that fails the appropriate electrical tests or operates incorrectly may require replacement.
Can an EV charger cause an RCD to trip?
An EV charging installation can be associated with RCD operation if an electrical fault or leakage current occurs. However, you should not assume the EV charger is responsible. The complete relevant circuit and protective devices should be investigated.
Why has the green light disappeared from my mains smoke alarm?
A missing green power indicator can mean the smoke alarm has lost its mains supply. Possible causes include a circuit problem, protective device issue or connection fault. The alarm and its electrical supply should be checked.
How often should smoke alarms be replaced?
Always follow the manufacturer’s replacement date and instructions printed on the alarm. Many domestic smoke alarms have a defined service life, so checking the replacement date should form part of routine home electrical safety checks.
Can an MCB be incorrectly connected to the consumer unit busbar?
Yes. A poor connection or incorrectly seated protective device can cause loss of supply and may create a potentially serious electrical problem. Work inside a consumer unit should only be carried out by a competent person.
Should I call an electrician if my RCD keeps tripping?
Yes, particularly when the RCD repeatedly trips, refuses to reset, feels abnormal or you cannot identify the cause. Repeated tripping can be a warning of an electrical fault that requires investigation.
Who can investigate RCD and consumer unit faults in Corby?
NAT4MAX Security Engineering Ltd provides electrical fault finding in Corby, including RCD problems, consumer unit faults, EV electrical issues and smoke alarm checks. As a NICEIC Approved Contractor, we can investigate the cause rather than simply replacing components unnecessarily.
